Among the many fanciful surprises in Dan Rawling and Bob Vaccaro’s Portsmouth, New Hampshire, garden are the twin pergolas radiating from a grassy circle. In each pergola, a series of rose trellises spiral, lath encircled garden ornaments that resemble giant neoclassical whirligigs face one another across green paths. Replicas of historic structures found in early 19th century gardens when this storied port city was in its heyday, these lighthearted trellises are crowned with tall wooden pineapple finials and painted turquoise.
