Built as a post in ground structure about 1720, the Matthew Jones House on Mulberry Island at Fort Eustis is one of fewer than a handful of surviving examples of the once prevalent building form. It’s also a rare surviving illustration of the way social ambition and building forms changed in the early 1700s, with the original hall and parlor frame structure being expanded and modernized into a brick Georgian manor house boasting an entrance porch tower and private dining and sleeping rooms. Tim has been a Clare trail blazer in the Spanish origin tempranillo grape and he and his winemaker Brett Schultz spent long hours finding the appropriate site, soil and vine clone before planting 6.5 hectares of the variety in 2004. Tempranillo means “early” in Spanish appropriate because it ripens early and the Mr Mick version of the variety heads this list of reds from a range of regions that over deliver on price. Juicy and multi faceted, this is ruby red, has potpourri aromas and zips onto the front of the palate with cherry flavour.
